The world of Catholic journalism in Italy mourns the loss of 58-year-old Giuseppe De Carli, the chief reporter of Vatican news. Announcement of his death was made by the director of the Vatican Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, who said, ?We remember him with great esteem and affection and ask everyone to pray for him.?

The authoritative ?voice? of Vatican news, De Carli, a writer and journalist, kept the world informed about papal trips abroad, particularly those of John Paul II. His TV coverage of these events helped people come to better know the Church?s most recent Popes and made them seem more approachable.

Cardinal Diogenes Tettamanzi, Archbishop of Milan, said on his diocesan web site: ?I always esteemed Giuseppe De Carli for his love for the Church?whose life, mission, successes and efforts he wanted to transmit?and his love for the truth.?
