India is a land rich in arts and cultural traditions. One of these is Bharatanatyam dance, which is intimately connected with religion and presents a liturgical dance dating back to the end of the 19th century in a new and original way. The fascinating language conveys the values of the Gospel to people and strengthens the desire to be united with the Lord. “An art that consecrates the body…. During the dance, the dancer merges her identity with rhythm and music, makes her body an instrument for the experience and expression of the spirit,” says Tanjore Balasaraswati, a famous Indian dancer.

The greatness of this art form lies in its integration and ability to harmonise the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of life, Most of the lyrics of Bharatanatyam songs lead to this.

Sr. Mary Silviya Anthonymuthu, of the Daughters of St Paul of India, conducts online dance classes with about 26 students participating from all over the country.

She says of her experience: “I feel very fortunate to enter this spiritual path. I have just completed my post-graduate course in Bharatanatyam. I am happy to share what I have learnt with my students, who range in age from 6 to 58. The seed has been sown, may Almighty God, who is the giver of life, make it grow and bear abundant fruit.”
