Today We Learn to be
Guardians of Humanity
Luke 2:16-21
Mary, for her part,
kept all these things,
pondering them in her heart.
Today we learn to be guardians of humanity:
of those near and far, of refugee and citizen,
of the baby in a cradle and the elderly in a wheelchair,
of the one who smiles at you and the one who turns away.
The Solemnity of the Mother of God
is the gateway to this year that is beginning,
unique and unrepeatable.
It marks the beginning of a new time,
generates the opportunity to say “yes” to the Word,
and teaches us, before all else,
to become silent guardians of the mystery of life.
Mary is the teacher of discipleship,
the guarantor that the impossible can be realized,
the assurance that the fulfillment of the Father’s plan
is brought to completion in history.
This is the true wish for the year now beginning:
let us learn to be guardians,
mothers of the human in ourselves
and in those we encounter.
