Fulfill your good promises, O Lord. This is the theme that was the guiding thread of 70 days of prayer and fasting for peace in which the Churches of South Sudan have been engaged since June 10th. This initiative was announced on Monday June 9th by Pastor Tut Kony Nyang Kon, the Secretary General of the Council of Churches of South Sudan “at a time when a complex crisis, characterized by armed conflict, food insecurity and displacement, continues to manifest itself in the youngest nation in the world.”
All the churches have therefore been asked to “ensure that your members commit to praying that South Sudan overcomes the challenges and progress towards the development and prosperity of its citizens and institutions.”
In the meantime, the churches are also carrying the burden of caring for refugees fleeing the war in neighboring Sudan. Many are returning South Sudanese who had previously sought refuge in the northeastern African country, while others are local refugees now facing the harsh realities of war.
