Shakti Samuha, a Nepalese group set up in 2000 by ex-sex slaves to liberate Asian women from human trafficking in India and China, is one of the five winners of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award.

The award is Asia’s highest honor and is widely regarded as the region’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. It was set up by the Philippine government in 1958 to honor individuals and associations in Asia that stand out for their selfless efforts to change society for the better.
