Pope Meets Mariam: Thank You for Your Courageous Witness to the Faith

At his private residence in Domus Santa Marta, Vatican City, Pope Francis met with Mariam Yehya Ibrahim, the Sudanese woman sentenced to death in her homeland several months ago because of her Christian faith. Finally liberated, she and her family are stopping over in Italy on their way to the United States.

The meeting with the Pope, which included Mariam’s husband and two small children, was very warm, serene and affectionate. During the meeting, which lasted about half an hour, the Pope thanked Mariam for her courageous witness and constancy in faith. In return, she thanked the Pope for his prayers and those of many other Christians and people of good will, saying that those prayers were a great support and comfort to her during her time in prison.
