Truth, dignity, and freedom were the three guiding words of the G20 on Information, held on September 12 in the Protomoteca Hall of the Capitoline Hill as part of the World Meeting on Human Fraternity 2025. The roundtable brought together directors, editors-in-chief, and CEOs of international news organizations to reflect on the role of communication—so often reduced today to a battlefield of conflict and propaganda. According to the World Press Freedom Index 2025 of Reporters Without Borders, more than half of the world’s population—about 4.25 billion people—live in countries classified as “red zones” for press freedom, where severe political, economic, and military pressures exist. In response to this alarming trend, major outlets such as Il Sole 24 Ore, La Repubblica, CNN, The New York Times, Le Monde, Fox News, CBS, BBC, The Times, Sky News Group, Folha de S. Paulo, Grupo Globo, Rappler News, Nation Centre, El Comercio, RPP Noticias, as well as L’Osservatore Romano, Quotidiano Nazionale, ANSA, and others met in Rome for dialogue.
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti reminded participants that “The experience of the roundtables helps us to meet one another and to listen, to get to know each other and to recognize ourselves.” Fr. Enzo Fortunato, coordinator of the G20, further emphasized: “Informing is not a neutral profession—it is a responsibility that requires courage, because telling the truth means safeguarding the dignity of those who have no voice.”
