The Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear War took place between Castel Gandolfo and Rome. It was a three-day forum that brought together thirty Nobel laureates, former heads of state and government, religious leaders, and international experts in artificial intelligence.
At the conclusion of the proceedings, the participants signed “Rome Declaration,” inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica humanitas. “Disarming the next arms race”—spanning both the nuclear and digital realms—is the goal stated in the opening lines of the document, which is founded on six key principles: disarmament, responsible development, responsible use of artificial intelligence, governance, leadership, and nuclear disarmament.
The Declaration calls for ensuring that no organization initiates, and no government authorizes, fully automated recursive self-improvement processes in artificial intelligence systems without adequate monitoring mechanisms and the capability to be promptly halted if necessary.
