A Growing Number of Christians in Africa

By now, Christianity has more adherents in Africa than Islam does, making it the continent’s first religion. This affirmation is based on the data presented at the recent Congress, Religions in a Globalized Context, organized by the El Jadida University in Morocco in collaboration with the New Religions Study Center of Italy.

Thirty-one of Africa’s 59 countries have a Christian majority, 21 a Muslim majority and 6 a majority of traditional religions. Over the long term, this reality will change not only Africa but also Christianity, as John Paul II intuitively perceived.

The late Pope devoted great time and attention to this continent, as his successor Benedict XVI is also doing. In fact, the current Pope has already visited Africa twice.
