The American periodical Time Magazine has chosen Pope Francis as its “Person of the Year” for 2013. Each December, the magazine’s last issue dedicates its cover and lead story to a person who, in the periodical’s judgment, has most greatly influenced world events over the past year.

Commenting on this year’s choice, a Vatican spokesperson said, “It is a positive sign that one of the world’s most prestigious declarations is given to a man who announces spiritual, religious and moral values and who effectively promotes peace and greater justice.”
