The FSPs of South Africa recently hosted a gathering in their book center’s conference room to launch a new title: A Catholic Response to AIDS in South Africa.

The book is very timely due to the fact that a high percentage of the people of South Africa and neighboring countries have HIV. One of the most serious consequences of this is that more than 2 million orphan children have AIDS.

The Catholic Church and religious Institutes at work in the country carry out an important role in coping with this crisis by supporting the sick through various activities. Since the early 1980’s, the Church has been in the forefront when it comes to offering care and information on the prevention of AIDS.

The newly-released book analyzes the pastoral aspect and theological motivations of this active involvement through essays by various authors. During the book launch, the most important points of the text were present by Bishop Kevin Dowling, Fr. Stuart Bate and Sr. Alison Munro, OP (coordinator of the AIDS department of the South Africa Episcopal Conference).
