United Nations Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote the welfare of minors throughout the world.

One third of the children in developing countries are not able to attend school because they are forced to work. Another third of these children are denied an education due to war. This data is provided by a study carried out in 41 countries by ChildFund Alliance, a global network that defends the rights of minors. The study surveyed the situations of about 6200 children between the ages of 10 and 12.

Reminding everyone of the importance of this day, Pope Francis said: “I appeal to the consciences of all people, institutions and families: I urge you to protect always more the rights of children and ensure their welfare by liberating them from all forms of slavery, recruitment into armed groups and maltreatment. I hope that the international community will keep watch over them, guaranteeing all children the right to attend school and receive an education so that they will be able to grow up serenely and look confidently to the future.”
