“We believe that Catholics who inhabit the Internet and social networks are a new force capable of supporting concrete initiatives for the sole purpose of promoting the Gospel and the formation of individuals.” This is the power-idea behind the National Catholic Congress Online (Conacat), to be held in Brazil from 11-17 August.
The first of its kind to be organized completely online, the Congress will revolve around the theme, All Together for a Culture of Encounter, in response to the repeated pleas of Pope Francis to build such a culture. Forty-two guest speakers from many different branches of society and walks of life will make their contributions to the event: priests, university professors, seminarians, members of Church associations and movements, reporters, communications professionals, politicians, designers, photographers…. The speakers will focus on 4 main subjects: communications, commitment in the political arena, youth, the arts and design.
Each day, 6 videos and their accompanying talks will be posted on the Internet in a prescheduled order. Lessons will be offered free of charge but they will also be available to those who want to purchase them: the revenues will be used to help two organizations that work with mothers at risk. There is no admittance fee to the Congress, which is being coordinated by journalist Wagner Moura with the help of the Vice President of the Brazilian Episcopal Conference.
