On 27 January, the world celebrated International Holocaust Remembrance Day–the day on which, 70 years ago, the largest Nazi death camp (Auschwitz-Birkenau) was liberated.

The Day was instituted as a reminder of the Shoah, racist legislation, the persecution of the Jews and the many other Europeans who were deported, imprisoned and killed, as well as all those who, in different fields and camps, opposed the Nazi extermination program and risked their lives to save other lives and protect the persecuted.
