College Radio Conquers the Web

In the United States, it is called College Radio. The British, instead, prefer the term Student Radio. The Canadian Telecommunications Commission calls it Community Radio. In Italy it is known as University Radio. All these radio stations, which are run by youth for youth, celebrated World College Radio Day on 2 October 2014 by means of round-the-clock transmissions uniting 700 stations in 43 countries.

Campus Radio broadcasting is a very interesting window through which to view what is going on in universities throughout the world. The broadcasts do not serve as channels of protest but instead narrate daily life on campus and offer suggestions to students. Each station is the voice of a particular college community. The challenge for the future will be to redefine these voices in a digital context. In fact, it is not by chance than many campus radio stations have integrated radio with the Web and online TV.
