The Pontifical Council for the Laity has granted canonical recognition to the international Association Signis, approving its Statute in the presence of its president, board of directors and the superiors of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.
In his speech during the erection ceremony, Cardinal Stanislaus Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, reminded everyone that “Signis is called to form lay Catholics who work in the media so that they will truly be salt and light as well as leaven capable of transforming the world from the inside. Your Christian testimony is important for the Church and for the world. The Church needs this and is counting on you as part of her evangelizing mission in the world today.”
Signis is a worldwide network of organizations, institutions and people (including the Daughters of St. Paul) who work in the world of the media to sensitize Christians to the importance of human communication in all cultures, encouraging them to make their voices heard in this important area.
The Association, which represents Catholic media in different governmental and non-governmental organizations, is committed to encouraging policies that promote the respectful communication of Christian values, justice and human rights; to motivating information professionals to engage in dialogue on issues of professional ethics; and to promoting ecumenical and interreligious cooperation in the world of communications.
