The exhibit, The Gaucho: Tradition, Art and Faith, on display in the Vatican until 16 June, honors Pope Francis by presenting the rich artistic heritage, history and traditions of the Argentine pampas–the vast fertile plains originally inhabited by native Americans and typified by the figure of the gaucho, the region’s legendary horsemen, who are held up as a national symbol of justice, courtesy and hospitality.

The display features more than 200 pieces, including a host of gaucho-inspired artwork, historical documents, medals, etc. It also illustrates the development of goldworking (introduced by the colonizers) through the crafting of liturgical objects, jewelry and articles used to embellish clothing, horse harnesses and other equine trappings.
