An International Telecommunications Union Report forecasts that in 2014 the number of mobile phone contracts will surpass 7 billion, 100 million–the amount of people on our planet.
Currently, mobile phone contracts number 6 billion, 800 million but that figure is rapidly rising. The part of the globe with the most cell phones is the ex-Soviet Union, with 1.7 mobile phones per inhabitant. Africa has the least cell phones: 63 phone contracts for every 100 people, but this number is also growing steadily.
The report also informs us that 2 billion, 700 million people (almost 40% of the world’s population) are connected to the Internet. But according to Hamadoun Toure, president of the International Telecommunications Union, “This means that two-thirds of the world’s population still does not have access to the Internet and thus is excluded from the digital revolution that is transforming our planet.”
