World Radio Day was celebrated on February 13, 2025. Established by UNESCO, this day recognizes the significance of radio as a powerful means of communication. The date was not chosen at random: on February 13, 1946, the first United Nations radio broadcast aired, marking a historic milestone in global information dissemination. However, it was only in 2012 that the UN officially designated this day to emphasize the vital role of radio in society.

Each year, World Radio Day highlights a specific theme to showcase radio’s impact. For 2025, UNESCO has chosen Radio and Climate Change, underscoring radio’s essential role in spreading information about the environmental crisis. As one of the most accessible and far-reaching media, radio can connect with isolated communities, deliver timely warnings, and raise public awareness about the urgent actions needed to combat global warming.

Despite competition from the internet and digital platforms, radio remains a cornerstone of communication. It is an immediate, reliable, and democratic tool that provides millions with access to news, culture, and entertainment. From music broadcasts to in-depth programs, radio continues to be a constant presence in our lives, accompanying us with its unmistakable voice.
