From 20-28 July 2018, about 250,000 visitors flooded the Piana Valley in the province of Salerno, Italy, to participate in the 48th edition of the Giffoni International Film Festival, a cinema event for children and teenagers. 100 films (11 of them Italian) were in competition this year, judged by 5,601 children and teenagers from 52 different countries.

The Film Festival, which was created in 1971 with the aim of promoting and developing cinema for children, stands out for its sensitivity in the selection of films, guaranteed through a careful evaluation and analysis of the world cinema scene for young people. The themes of the movies selected for competition are always profound and current. The screening of a film is often followed by discussions that foster dialogue and reflection on it.

The Giffoni Film Festival promotes awareness of the values of integration, acceptance, exchange, and a sharing of cultures, as well as environmental sustainability and the protection of natural resources.

This year’s theme is water, which will serve as a common thread until 2020, when the Festival will celebrate its 50th birthday.
