The St. Egidio Community was awarded the Giuseppe Dossetti Peace Prize at the IX edition of this event for its project Humanitarian Corridors. One of the motivations listed for bestowal of the award was the community’s efforts to combat human trafficking and save war refugees in a way that is safe and sound for the individual and everyone else.

Completely self-funded, Humanitarian Corridors is a pilot project being carried out in Italy by the St. Egidio Community, with the collaboration of the Federation of Evangelical Churches and the Waldensian and Methodist Churches. The project, which springs from the desire to break the culture of helplessness that has been created by the images of countless deaths in the Mediterranean, can serve as a model for other European countries. Hospitality and integration of the refugees are guaranteed thanks to a support network that has sprung up, accompanied by the generosity of not only associations and parishes but also many families and individual citizens.
